Short-term outlook

The short-term outlook is published twice a year, in spring and in autumn. It is based on the latest market fundamentals, data, and insights from experts within the European Commission.

Autumn 2024 edition

Agricultural markets are showing positive signs of a return to a certain stabilisation, but the situation remains fragile due to weather-related issues, sanitary pressures in the animal sector, and challenges in the trade environment.

The overall macroeconomic and food price environment suggest potential improvements in demand for agri-food products across most sectors. Input costs have steadily declined over the past months, and the latest energy forecasts do not point to a significant increase in energy costs for EU farmers in the near future. The EU fertiliser market is also gradually stabilising, with prices slightly declining., However, lower cereal prices and smaller harvest due to adverse weather in 2024 may create some financial challenges for farmers in 2025 when purchasing fertilisers.

The outlook faces a high degree of uncertainty with challenges and risks linked to more frequent extreme weather events impacting production, the escalation of geopolitical conflicts with possible consequences on trade flows and input prices, and the resurgence of plant and animal diseases.

In this publication, market outlooks are provided for the EU-27. In addition to the short-term outlook, the Commission also publishes a statistical annex. The longer time series of EU balance sheets are available in the Agri-food data portal.
