Overview
The agricultural sector in Finland is characterised by the use of modern technology, high environmental and animal welfare standards and practices, but also by significant profitability challenges.
Finland is proportionately the most forested country in Europe, with 75% of its land covered by forests.
Goal and strategy
The cornerstones of Finland’s strategy are food security, farm competitiveness, increased environmental and climate ambition, and vibrant rural areas. A wide range of interventions are put in place in order to respond to the economic, environmental and social challenges faced by the agricultural sector and rural areas. The Finnish Plan encompasses both Mainland Finland and Åland Islands. While direct payments are the same for both, the rural development interventions are specifically designed for each of the two regions.
