EU Agriculture Commissioner Janusz Wojciechowski visited Kazakhstan on 27-31 May 2024, accompanied by a business delegation of senior representatives from the EU agri-food sector, in conjunction with the European Commission’s presence at the InterFood Astana fair. The purpose of the visit was to facilitate European agricultural food and beverage exports to Kazakhstan and expand their presence in the Central Asian markets.
The visit to Kazakhstan concentrated on providing market intelligence in the food and beverage sector, business-to-business activities, as well as retail and site visits. The programme of the business delegation provided the representatives of the European agri-food sector with a platform to discover Kazakhstan’s market and to make direct business contacts both in Almaty and Astana.

Description
On 17 June 2019 the Council adopted Conclusions on a new EU Strategy on Central Asia, which provides a framework for strengthening regional cooperation, and for addressing new opportunities and challenges in the region. The Strategy on Central Asia offers a broad basis for cooperation and has since been complemented by the Global Gateway Strategy and the European Green Deal, which are also relevant for the EU’s relations with the region. Agriculture trade and cooperation were identified as potential areas of enhanced relations between the EU and Kazakhstan.
Kazakhstan is a key partner for the EU in Central Asia, which has gained strategic importance after Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine. The High Level Mission aims to strengthen the EU agri-food position in Kazakhstan. The mission will be the first of its kind in Central Asia, with Kazakhstan being chosen as the country with vast agricultural land and therefore offering the potential for business opportunities and cooperation. Furthermore, strengthening the position of the EU agri-food business in Kazakhstan is expected to have a spill over effect on other Central Asian countries, helping the EU agri-food exporters expand further in the region.
